SEP 12: Andrew Bush at M+B: Artist Opening Reception & Book Signing

Join M+B Saturday, September 12 from 7 to 9 pm for the artist's opening reception and book signing for ANDREW BUSH: VECTOR PORTRAITS at 612 N. Almont Drive in West Hollywood

M+B is proud to present an exhibition of color photographs by ANDREW BUSH titled VECTOR PORTRAITS, opening on September 12 and running through October 17, with a reception and book signing by the artist on Saturday, September 12 from 7 – 9pm. Vector Portraits is Andrew Bush’s series from 1989 to 1997, shot in and around Los Angeles using his car as a tripod and capturing Angelenos vis-à-vis their unique relationships with their automobiles.  The series began in 1989 after Bush graduated from Yale with an MFA in Photography and moved to Los Angeles. Struck by the city’s “great relationship between people and their car,” Bush attached a medium format camera to his passenger seat with a strobe light and a shutter release cable and drove the city streets and freeways. Either stopped in traffic or moving at speeds of 20 to 70 miles an hour, Bush’s method included “moving in parallel with the person next to [him], as a way of coming into their world” and then releasing the shutter. The essence of what makes these images appealing is that they are a prolonged version of the awkward eye contact frequently made while driving. It is undeniably voyeuristic and satisfying, and now one has the leisure to examine minutely while remaining anonymous. Bush offers up a slice of Los Angeles life at its most mundane and telling. The work has been exhibited in solo and group shows, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), Davis Museum and Cultural Center at Wellesley College (Wellesley, Massachusetts) and Staatliche Kunsthalle (Baden-Baden, Germany).
ANDREW BUSH: VECTOR PORTRAITS runs from September 12  - October 15, 2009. http://www.mbfala.com (Press Release). The artist will be available to sign copies of his new book Andrew Bush: Vector Portraits published by Yale University Press.

Woodstock: The 40th Anniversary in Pictures
Opening reception for artists - Saturday, August 15, 7-10 pm
Woodstock: The 40th Anniversary exhibition runs August 15 to September 25, 2009.
Please join us for the opening reception for the artists on Saturday, August 15, 7-10 pm.

The exhibition features works of Jim Marshall, Baron Wolman, Henry Diltz and Lisa Law.

This show recreates the experience of the ambiance, the crowd and the music of the world’s most famous music festival. On August 15-18, 1969, Max Yasgur's 600-acre dairy farm in Bethel, NY was transformed into the Woodstock Music & Art Fair. The organizers expected 200,000 people, but in this muddy cow pasture, over 450,000 people enjoyed a three-day concert experience featuring 32 of the best-known musicians of the day.

The artists:

Jim Marshall's 40-years of photography include famous shots of Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Janis Joplin and other stars in rock music. Since he demanded total access, Marshall often lived 24-7 with his subjects, and his pictures reflect affection for the artists as they describe the musicians' character.

Baron Wolman settled in Haight-Ashbury in the 1960's, in the neighborhood that included Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead living nearby. After meeting Jann Wenner in 1967, Wolman became the chief photographer for Wenner’s new magazine, Rolling Stone.

Henry Diltz embarked on a photographic career with an album cover for The Lovin’ Spoonful. His unique artistic style has produced powerful photographic essays of Woodstock; The Monterey Pop Festival; The Doors; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Jimi Hendrix and scores of other legendary artists.

Lisa Law was backstage taking pictures with The Beatles; Peter, Paul and Mary; The Kingston Trio; Otis Redding; The Lovin Spoonful; The Velvet Underground and The Byrds. Her own house guests included Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. She helped feed hundreds of thousands at Woodstock with the Hog Farm Commune.

The exhibition will be on display through September 25th. For more info, see the print edition of the Sunday, August 9th Los Angeles Times, or click here.

MISSING MARILYN MONROE: LIFE Reveals Exclusive Never Before Published Photos of MM Before She Was Famous

Posted by Don Rose

June 1, 2009 would have been the 83rd birthday of Marilyn Monroe. To celebrate, Life.com released newly discovered photos of the iconic actress . The year was 1950 and she was just 24, spending a day at L.A.’s Griffith Park. The negatives for these photos were recently discovered during the ongoing effort to digitize LIFE's immense and storied photo archive, including outtakes and entire shoots that never saw the light of day.

The photos feature Marilyn early in her career as she'd just begun to grab attention. Three months before the shoot she appeared as a crooked lawyer's girlfriend in "The Asphalt Jungle," and two months after she had a small role as an aspiring starlet in "All About Eve."

"She was unknown then, so I was able to spend a lot of time shooting her," said Life photographer Ed Clark. "I sent several rolls to Life in New York, but they wired back, 'Who the hell is Marilyn Monroe?'"

See and read about the stunning photos at: http://www.life.com/image/88047985/in-gallery/27412.

BUSH, CHENEY PHOTO AT OBAMA INAUGURATION: IS BUSH WATCHING TV DURING OBAMA SPEECH?

by Don Rose

Love this image from the Obama Inauguration. The last picture of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney together in power, or should I say having just lost it. The Dastardly Duo are seen here sitting behind Obama as the new President delivers his Inauguration Speech. I must say, Cheney in the wheelchair and black hat looks part Snidely Whiplash, part Mr. Potter from It's a Wonderful Life, with a dash of Dr. Strangelove. Meanwhile, Bush is in typical W mode, looking impatient with pursed lips and... what the... is he watching television? In the middle of Obama's historic speech? Sure looks like he's holding a smartphone here. Maybe it's streaming CNN, so he can see what he can't see live, since he's seated BEHIND the new Prez. Okay, that makes sense. Or is he texting? "I cnt b leev hw long ths is takng. I think Dik's asleep. Wish i was". Or maybe W's just holding Obama's Blackberry for him (or should I say Barackberry)...

FYI, this closeup was captured after zooming in on a longshot GIGAPAN image that is created by integrating many photos of a scene into a zoomable panorama. Start long and wide, then zoom in again and again; each time the image refocuses into sharpness. Quite fun to fiddle with. There are other similar technologies that also let you combine many images into one megaphoto or metaphoto or gigaphoto (pick your prefix) that you can pan and zoom. Microsoft's Photosynth is one such technology. Photosynth transforms a set of 2D shots into a kind of 3D navigable image. Their "Obama moment" megaphoto of the Oath garnered lots of attention (I'm sure Chief Justice Roberts has played with it many times, to relive that magic moment he made so memorable).

Final note: after zooming in for an even closer look, it seems the W-smartphone-holding theory may have been a bit premature. He might just be clapping and the "phone" may be a trick of the light and angle and that water bottle behind W's gloves. Guess we'll never know.

Poignant, knowing, rich with insights and tributes, THE RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE chronicles Muhammad Ali's legendary trip of 1974 to Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) to fight a heavily favored George Foreman in the first world heavyweight boxing championship held on the African continent. While the match serves as thematic nucleus, Bingham's photography covers Ali's entire eight-week stay, recounting the event in all its dimensions, including a star-studded musical festival, buzzing paparazzi and impinging politics.

HOWARD L. BINGHAM: THE RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE includes over 60 color and black and white photographs and runs from April 19 - May 31, 2008. More info at the M+B website: mbfala.com

NOV. 18: PUNK 365 AND JENNY LENS PHOTOS AT LA LUZ DE JESUS GALLERY

From Jenny Lens's website, http://www.jennylens.com/ :

The Jenny Lens Punk Archive is so pleased to be in the special punk rock photo exhibit, La Luz de Jesus Gallery, 4633 Hollywood Blvd, just east of Vermont, Nov 18, 2007, 4 to 8 pm opening, to celebrate release of “Punk 365,” by Holly George-Warren, Abrams. I had to stand up to my own publisher, Rizzoli, to be in the book. They are looking out for my highly anticipated first solo photo book, “Punk Pioneers, but it was bad timing, or else I would have have more photos in “Punk 365.” At least I have 24 hard-won shots in it!! Not my Jenny Lens classics, but some unpublished shots not in my book“Punk Pioneers. You’ll just have to get both, along with “Live at the Masque,” and then you still will only see a small fraction of my Jenny Lens Punk Archive. But better prints than in any previous publications!
