MAR 27: The REUNION FUNDRAISER at GIBSON SHOWROOM to Raise Funds For Patrick Chawki Medical Fund

Featured Event Listing by Don Rose

On March 27, 2009 a very special event called The REUNION, spearheaded by Laurie Green and produced by GoodGirls PR (the public relations firm she runs along with business partner Tracy Rubin), is taking place at the Gibson Showroom in Beverly Hills. Tickets are $75 at the door, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Patrick Chawki Medical Fund.

The story of Patrick Chawki may have had a very different ending if not for Laurie. The LA Times published a moving piece today about how her efforts have reconnected Patrick with long lost friends, baseball teammates and classmates (hence the Reunion title of tonight's benefit event). Ms. Green, a high school friend of Patrick's, discovered that he was living in a nursing home and had not died like his High School friends had thought. They had lost touch with Pat years ago, but now they find that he's been in a Canoga Park facility, unable to communicate. Hence, Laurie organized tonight's fundraiser to pay for therapy that she hopes will help Chawki walk and talk again. Here are the details:

The REUNION, March 27, 2009, 7-10 p.m. Gibson Musical Instruments Showroom: 9350 Civic Center Dr., Beverly Hills CA. $75 per person.

All are encouraged to attend the event tonight. Your admission includes food, libations, DJ, a stellar silent auction and more. Tickets are available at the door for $75, a portion of which will help raise funds for a very courageous man who battles tough odds every day.

Here is a message from Laurie Green about Pat and the event being held in his honor:

For those of you who are unaware of Pat’s very unique situation, he suffers from Locked-in-Syndrome, which essentially has him buried alive within his own body. A few weeks ago, I created a Facebook page for my very dear friend so that his sister Pam would be able to see her brother all the way from Lebanon, and so that many of you can learn about Pat’s situation. Eight years ago, many of us heard that Pat passed away, and it wasn’t until recently that we uncovered the shocking news that this was not the case, and that he is, in fact, still alive and still PAT!

In light of this discovery, we have moved the REUNION up a few months so that we can help get Pat the consistent level of medical assistance that he requires on a daily basis. A portion of the funds raised from the REUNION will aid Pat as he deals with his debilitating disease, and additionally, we will be hosting a silent auction with a wide array of wonderful items, also supporting Pat’s medical condition.

The REUNION will take place on the evening of Friday, March 27 at the Gibson Musical Instruments Showroom in Beverly Hills, CA 7-pm-10-pm. ... $75 at the door ... If you would like transportation to the event contact ECONATION, toll free 877-326-6286 ext.1 or visit www.econation.com. Mention code GOODGIRLS and 10% will go towards the Patrick Chawki Medical Fund!
Free parking in lot across street.

Thank YOU: Spanish Kitchen • The Belmont • Stone Fire Pizza • Pink Vodka • Pyramid Beer • Izze Sparkling Juice • Vitamin energy and DJ ADAM 12 from SHE WANTS REVENGE.

###

Finally, here is an excerpt from today's LA Times article about Laurie and Pat, by Bob Pool (entitled "Grant High classmates find a long-lost friend -- paralyzed"; bold highlights added):

Pat Chawki's classmates thought he was dead ... But when one Grant High School alum wrote to Chawki's sister to express her condolences, she learned that the popular former baseball star lay paralyzed and nearly forgotten in a Canoga Park nursing home.

Laurie Green discovered that for the last nine years, Chawki has suffered from a rare disorder that renders him fully cognitive, but unable to move or speak. Because he cannot talk or write, he was unable to tell his family how to reach his friends.

Green ... immediately went to the nursing home. She snapped pictures of the 41-year-old Chawki and posted them on Facebook, explaining to friends that their buddy was still very much alive -- and very lonely. Soon, a parade of former classmates was making regular trips to visit him.

On one visit, Green noticed that Chawki could move his thumb up and down. ... Green devised an alphabet poster that friends could use to help him communicate.

His old buddies were stunned to find that Chawki was not only alive but was alert and mentally active. With his thumb, he slowly used the poster to spell out: "I love you all."
...

Workers at the nursing home were puzzled when after all these years Chawki started having large numbers of visitors. "...I told them that everybody had thought Patrick was dead, that I hadn't known how to contact them," said his mother, 72-year-old Rose Chawki of Van Nuys. She takes the bus to visit her son three times a week and give him some physical therapy. Medicare and Medi-Cal pay for his nursing care but do not cover therapy.

That's why Green and her public relations business partner Tracy Rubin have organized a silent auction fundraiser for 7 p.m. today at the Gibson Musical Instruments Showroom at 9350 Civic Center Drive, Beverly Hills. Proceeds from the $75 per person event will be channeled through a nonprofit group the pair have created and used for professional therapy for Chawki...

Plate by Plate 2008, Positively Great; Project by Project’s Annual Food/Beverage Tasting Benefit Hosts Hundreds at California Science Center Downtown

Project by Project Returns to Wallis Annenberg Building at the CSC for Annual Benefit Bash

Event Report by Don Rose

(July 26, 2008 - Los Angeles CA) After years of success in hosting its signature event, in both New York City and in Los Angeles, Project by Project hosted its Sixth Annual Tasting Benefit tonight, to a large crowd of upscale professionals, foodies, VIPs and media. As they did last year, PbP featured many food and beverage booths along with an excellent silent auction, a lively live auction (someone got a guitar signed by the Rolling Stones for just a few thousand), a VIP lounge and an early private reception for VIP ticketholders.

This year, Project by Project’s partner is the Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE), a non-profit, non-partisan, community-based organization whose mission is to advance the political empowerment of the Asian Pacific American community.

The PbP gala once again showcased savory food and dessert delicacies prepared by talented chefs from the best restaurants in Los Angeles (such as Bashan, above), as well as samplings from premier wineries and beverage companies. My fave libation was GuS -- as in Grownup Soda -- no high fructose corn syrup, not overly sweet, refreshing carbonated taste.

The amazing dessert assortment is one of the hallmarks of the PbP soiree every year, and 2008 was no exception. Valerie featured Petit Fours, ginger toffee and square chocolate bites with a real kick (below, left). Another popular booth featured yummy cakes (below, right), including a Vietnamese green tea coffee cake and, to satisfy your dark side, chocolate cupcakes topped with chocolate frosting. Mmmmmm...

The silent auction, like last year, featured great items, filling a room off to the side of the main party area. 2008 seemed more focused on sports memorabilia, with one of a kind items like a signed "Apology" ball from baseball legend Pete Rose (below, left) and Joe Dimaggio photos with a signature from the Yankee great (below, right).

And there were some very cool entertainment-related items up for bid as well, like Walt Disney photos and an actual Disney check (below, left); Shrek and Donald Duck were also present (below, right, next to a Jeter jersey).

And what LA party is complete without Jack? Nicholson, that is. The Jack Pack seen here not only had film items but even featured the actor's head (see middle bottom of photo, below). Another similar collection with pics and head bust featured fellow actor Johnny Depp. There were also guitars, one signed by the Eagles, another by Willie Nelson. The PbP gala is getting a reputation for having one of the best auctions of any LA event, one of many reasons you should plan to attend in 2009. More information at http://atb.projectbyproject.org/.

event report by Don Rose

On May 15, 2008, the Valley Cultural Center held its 9th Annual Food, Wine & Microbrew Festival at Westfield Promenade Mall in Woodland Hills - another big success for VCC. And we mean BIG! Hundreds of happy foodies and wine/beer buffs attended, braving the raving heat to eat, drink, be merry, and bid on great live and silent auction items. Dozens of exhibits (thankfully enveloped in a giant air-conditioned tent in part of the mall's parking lot) showcased a wonderful array of food and libations, including many faves of The LA Report, such as Ruby's (super shakes and mini-burgers), Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (thank God for their Ice Blended creations, in mocha and vanilla, yum!), BJ's (excellent pizza and pasta), Trader Joes (terrific truffles and other chocolate desserts), Follow Your Heart (vegetarian food that tastes great while being good for you), Coca-Cola (giving out Cokes, water and logo-branded T-shirts), and many many more booths, all manned (or womaned) with friendly folks eager to serve. We highly recommend you attend next year. For more information about VCC and their events, visit valleycultural.org.

MAY 29: HEAL THE BAY ANNUAL "BRING BACK THE BEACH" DINNER BASH, SANTA MONICA

Join us (us being the fine folks at Heal The Bay) on May 29, 2008, for Heal the Bay's “Bring Back the Beach” Dinner. The annual event begins at 5:00pm with a cocktail reception and silent auction. Dinner, live auction and musical entertainment will follow. Location: Barker Hangar (or is it Barkar? I have seen both spellings in print), on Airport in lovely Santa Monica (from the 10 freeway, take Bundy south, pass Ocean Park, go Right on Airport, then look for the signs and all the pretty people; the Hangar is on the right side).

Brian Wilson, a fave of The LA Report, was one of last year's dinner Honorees, and actresses Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Amy Smart both enjoyed last year's dinner. 2008 promises to be just as fun and rewarding. We recommend you attend.

Featured Art Auction

Losing his grandmother to breast cancer several years ago, artist Phil Barnes of Northridge chose to be involved in Fashion for the Cure as a personal statement to the love of his family member. "I express deeply through my art where designing a piece for the branding and fundraising of the event is truly quite an honor and act of my compassion," comments Phil. His acrylic painting dedicated to the event, "One Love" which will be auctioned off at the event, represents the victorious, healing, yet feminine essence of those affected by breast cancer.

EVENT REPORT: STARLIGHT ARCADE - JUNIOR LEAGUE CHARITY BENEFIT AT SONY

(October 13th, 2007 - Culver City, Los Angeles, CA) Event Report by Don Rose

The annual Starlight Arcade event once again took over Main Street at Sony Studios for five fun hours tonight (VIP ticketholders were allowed early entry, preferred parking and silent auction bidding opps from 7 to 8 :30pm, with everyone else arriving at 8:30). The fun went all the way to 12 midnight, and even a while after as many partygoers were having too much fun to leave!

Everyone enjoyed a sampling of foods from LA's hottest restaurants, and vodka cocktails from V2 Vodka & POM (makers of The LA Report's favorite Peach ice tea beverage). Highlights included soups, Mexican food (Chipotle restaurant serving a carnitas dish), Asian food (from local fave Chan Dara) burritos, pizza, amazing chocolate and vanilla ice cream plus other dessert options ranging from gourmet cookies to cake that, well, took the cake - plus it would be a mistake to forsake cupcakes from Susie Cakes.

The game section at Starlight Arcade was bigger and better than ever, this year adding a "Wii Row" where you could play unlimited games of virtual boxing, golf, tennis and bowling on Nintendo Wii machines (which is ironic, since this was at Sony after all, makers of the competing game machine Playstation 3). Also fun were the classic videogames (Frogger, Ms. Pacman, Galaxa, Space Invaders and more), and many racing games (from oldie but goodie Pole Position to skimobile simulators to a full blown NASCAR simulation inside a giant truck!). I had the most fun, though, on the simple non-video basketball free throw game, located in a side area that also featured a Cigar Lounge, beer garden and airhockey game. Also present there was a booth hosted by Thrillist, signing people up for their excellent daily email service - a fave here at The LA Report (think of it as Daily Candy for men).

The annual party was a benefit for the Junior League of LA charity. All proceeds from the fundraiser benefited JLLA projects and programs. You really can't beat Starlight Arcade's combination of activities; there are not many parties in LA that combine unlimited free games, music, silent auction (dozens of items), raffle (for a NASCAR simulator machine!), food, wine, beer, mixed drinks, garden, cigars, and fine art (provided by Andrew Weiss Gallery, with Picasso, Dali and Matisse artworks up for sale at amazing prices). For more information on next year's Starlight Arcade, please contact Tina Mallam, Starlight Arcade Chair, tmallam@mac.com or 310-480-4900. Also visit the website for JLLA's Starlight Arcade: http://www.jlla.org/?nd=fallparty.

EVENT REPORT: FOR THE ARTS AUCTION AT TRACK 16 GALLERY

(October 11, 2007: Santa Monica, CA) Event Report by Don Rose

One of Bergamot Station's most trafficked galleries is Track 16, and owner Robert Berman often allows this space to be used for worthy charitable causes. Tonight was no exception, as Berman served as host (and lively auctioneer!) at a benefit for the organization "For The Arts," whose mission is to raise much-needed money to keep arts programs alive in our public schools. Studies show a link between early arts exposure and enhanced brain development, so cutting arts classes for kids can end up robbing them of the chance to bring their potential skills (in art as well as science) to their fullest fruition.

The event featured a large silent auction, with many excellent art works available at starting bids ranging from $150 on up to the thousands (for a list of participating artists, click here). Some examples: Robbie Conal's famous Gandhi piece, an abstract work by Lita Albuquerque, and a photo by David Hume Kennerly capturing what may be the only instance where five living Presidents occupied the same space (Bush (Senior), Reagan, Carter, Ford and Nixon at the dedication of the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California). While attendees viewed all the stellar pieces, they also enjoyed gourmet passed appetizers as well as wine and Ginger Margueritas (courtesy Elixir G). Then came the climax of the soiree - the live auction - which raised thousands thanks to many guests' generous "bids for the kids."

For more information on For The Arts, please visit www.buyartnow.org, and keep an eye on their future events, which include concerts that have attracted many wonderful performers in the past, from Jackson Browne and David Crosby to local perennial favorite Venice.
