EVENT REPORT: GENART FASHIONABLY NATURAL & FRESH FACES IN FASHION 2008; TWO BACK-TO-BACK NIGHTS OF FASHION SHOWS AND AFTERPARTIES ROCK THE PETERSEN
At Genart's Fashionably Natural event (held on October 9, 2008), Maggie Gyllenhaal and SOYJOY definitely brought this boy joy -- as did Mandy Moore the following night when she was the celebrity host of the 11th Annual Fresh Faces in Fashion, another stellar Genart event always held at the start of LA Fashion Week. Both happenings were held at the beautiful Petersen Auto Museum in Los Angeles, always a great place for A-List events.
During the October 9 event, the effervesecent, lovely and talented "Ms. G." had the honor of introducing the eco-friendly spring '09 beautiful collections of Velvet Leaf, Brigid Catiis, Popomomo and The Battalion. The show was great, the event was fun and upbeat with great music by DJ Pesce, the eats and drinks were good and there was a kind of almost wholesome, organic vibe in the air as the beautiful models walked the catwalk. And those SOYJOY bars are good -- healthy, delicious and low calorie!
Both shows were great successes. Fashionably Natural brought out celebs like Willa Holland, Vanessa Brand, tennis player Katya Decker-Sadowski, Miss USA 2007 Rachel Smith, Christine Lakin, Katie Chonacas, Andrew Roach and Krysten Ritter to name a few. On the red carpet I pondered if Ms. Ritter was a relative of the late great John Ritter; "No" I was told... and coicidentally, seated near me at the show was lovely British Vogue writer Davida Deutsch Hall who I found out used to go to school with Jason Ritter and knew John too. Small world...
It was a total surprise and a blast to see my pal model Gaston Willig up on the runway and always great running into celeb photog Byron Purvis, a very talented host, actor and voice over artist as well. Thanks to Genart for the great event, and thanks to Carl Lindstrom for the nice photos on 944.com.

KU AMBIANCE BASH DRAWS DESIGN/ART PROFESSIONALS AS WESTWEEK KICKS OFF AT NEARBY PACIFIC DESIGN CENTER
(West Hollywood, CA: March 26, 2008) The LA Report was very impressed with Ku Ambiance, a new unique store/showroom/designspace, located just a block east of the PDC (a.k.a. the Pacific Design Center, or the Blue Whale to some insiders), where the 2008 edition of Westweek kicked off today. Many Westweekers attended tonight's festive party at the new space, which lasted almost till midnight and featured wonderful sushi as well as delectable desserts.
Ku Ambiance just launched at the recent CA BOOM design/architecture show, and their space (located on Huntley, a few feet north of Melrose) has an open Asian-themed feel, featuring an eclectic assortment of beautiful items, from custom commodes to cool clothes to a varied array of handmade vessels and porcelain creations. (Oh, and cute bobbing-head tigers; one man proudly showed off a pair as he departed.) Unique is the key word here, as all of the items at Ku Ambiance are made in limited quantities and hence superior quality and craftsmanship. Every design/fashion/art professional should definitely check out this wonderful new addition to the Melrose design district.

MAR. 19-30: TASTEMAKERS EXHIBITION FEATURES LEADING LOS ANGELES "STYLESETTERS" IN FASHION, DESIGN AND THE ARTS
Tastemaker: A designer or artist whose work or personal style sets a new standard or trend. Since the launch of her Tastemaker column in 2006, Los Angeles magazine Style Director Laurie Pike has spotlighted L.A.’s trendsetting talent in fashion, art, jewelry, home design, architecture, music, graphic design, and more. Now, the Tastemakers profiled in the monthly column are coming together for one remarkable showcase of their creativity in a gallery exhibition featuring work by L.A.-based style trendsetters across all arts disciplines that influence consumers around the world.
It all began with a search for new Tastemakers; on February 21, “Style Star of Tomorrow” auditions were held at Los Angeles magazine's offices. Entrants were invited to register at http://www.lamagtastemakers.com/ for a 5-minute timeslot to show the panel of judges (including Gen Art’s Jennifer Egan and Creative Intelligence’s Marc Friedland along with representatives from Otis and FIDM) their portfolios and vie for the opportunity to be one of three finalists whose work was showcased for voting on live morning TV March 12th. The “Style Star of Tomorrow” contest allows emerging talent to vie for the honor of being selected as someone to watch. Viewers cast their votes for their favorite artist.
Now, from Wednesday, March 19 through Sunday, March 30, an exhibition featuring L.A. Tastemakers’ work (created and installed by FIDM / The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) will open to the public -- featuring mural art created by renowned street artist Chase. It’s an exhibition of inventive interpretations of the Tastemakers’ work installed at The Tastemaker Gallery, a temporary space at the Hollywood & Highland Center, open daily from noon to six. The LA Report recommends you attend!

MOLLIE CULLIGAN, OWNER OF THE JACK RABBIT COLLECTION, WINS LOS ANGELES MAGAZINE'S STYLE STAR OF TOMORROW CONTEST
Los Angeles-based artists, stylists, architects, and designers on the rise made their way to Los Angeles Magazine recently to audition for the publication's panel of judges. The Style Star of Tomorrow contest is in celebration of the magazine's Tastemakers, an exhibition of works by the city's most exciting influencers in fashion, design, and the arts taking place at Hollywood and Highland from March 19th through 30th.
Mollie Culligan, creative director and owner of The Jack Rabbit Collection, is this year's winner of Los Angeles Magazine's contest. EVENT REPORT: PROJECT ETHOS "STARS ALIGNED" SOIREE SHINES WITH STELLAR ENTERTAINMENT, KILLER AFTERPARTY, AND EVEN TV STAR LARRY DAVID
On Leap Day 2008, "Stars Aligned" Event Merged Fashion, Music and Art at the Avalon in Hollywood; Eclectic Audience Included Star of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and Hundreds of Other Partiers for a Cause
by Don Rose
Project Ethos transformed the Avalon nightclub into a creative haven featuring a range of young, up and coming talent, and drew a packed house for the six hour event, which is now an annual tradition. Here are some of the event highlights:
Music - A range of mystical notes filled the Avalon Main Theatre space with melodic acts featuring Tyrone Wells, Meiko and Amber Rubarth. Tyrone was especially popular, it seemed; loved his medley of a range of hits that crossed many musical styles (and, come to think of it, who does medleys anymore? we miss 'em). Guests also imbibed cocktails at three full bars.
Fashion - The big fashion finale of the night started about 2 hours late, but that seems to be a standard thing with fashion shows, since their start times in LA seem to always run at least an hour behind (like clockwork, if you pardon the irony). I guess it is more dramatic that way, and when tonight's show finally began it was certainly worth the wait. A very sexy bellydancer came out first and gyrated seductively with others on stage behind her (see, I was so distracted I forget what the others were doing), followed by around 50+ celestial bodies covered in the divine creations of 8 excellent fashion designers. The nebula of fabrics, fashion and design were a fitting capper to the night's entertainment in the Main Theatre.
During the fashion show was when I spotted none other than Larry David, "Seinfeld" co-creator and star of HBO's hilarious "Curb Your Enthusiasm" - one of The LA Report's all time favorite TV programs. Although we can't confirm, from our vantage point it seemed Larry was on a date with an attractive young babe (as any single mensch worth hundreds of millions of dollars should be). Since the Avalon is a haven for young babes, and Larry is known to support worthy causes (which Project Ethos is), coming to this event was a perfect choice.
Art - We also enjoyed visiting the upper level (Spider Club) to see works by around a dozen artists, who created a wonderful array of color, imagery and form that stimulated all who came by. Very talented group indeed. The LA Report especially liked the color caricature of Prince Charles (granted, his facial features make him perhaps the easiest monarch ever to poke visual fun of), and the image of a reclining (or was it dying?) blue elephant on an American flag ("GOP RIP" might have been an apropos title).
Finally, there was the excellent Directors After Party at around 1am, where Project Ethos founders Heidi and Jason partied with VIP guests, press, designers, and other creative stars of the evening. This exclusive party featured DJ Johny Luv (www.myspace.com/djjohnyluv), free readings (from a seer of the future seated at a corner table), and delicious passed appetizers from Convivial Catering (our faves being the eel and avocado bites, Kobe burger sliders, tomato-and-cheese slices, and eggrolls). This after party was located inside Honey, the late night bistro that serves as an intimate "club within a club" for the Avalon.
All in all, The LA Report most enjoyed this Stars Aligned event. Since it is an annual affair, we recommend you attend next year. Keep it tuned here at The LA Report for future details. Special thanks to Jason at Project Ethos for his assistance.
For media who want more info on Project Ethos, please contact Jason@ProjectEthos.com. All other inquiries: contact Heidi@ProjectEthos.com. The LA Report recommends this annual event for next year, due to its multi-fun creativity and eclectic performance lineup.

Featured Art Auction
Losing his grandmother to breast cancer several years ago, artist Phil Barnes of Northridge chose to be involved in Fashion for the Cure as a personal statement to the love of his family member. "I express deeply through my art where designing a piece for the branding and fundraising of the event is truly quite an honor and act of my compassion," comments Phil. His acrylic painting dedicated to the event, "One Love" which will be auctioned off at the event, represents the victorious, healing, yet feminine essence of those affected by breast cancer.

EVENT REPORT: LA FASHION WEEK PARTY AT THE CRESCENT BEVERLY HILLS HOTEL
The Crescent Hotel, that classy overnightery/eatery/bar tucked away at the quiet corner of Crescent and Brighton in Beverly Hills, was the setting for a fun soiree Tuesday with numerous guests including fashion commentator Steven Cocojaru, former Miss California Candice Sanders, and many other fashionistas and LA Fashion Week attendees. Hotelier Gregory Peck, owner of the Crescent Hotel, and designer/retailer Katy Rodriguez, co-owner of the Los Angeles boutique Resurrection and also of her own namesake women’s wear line, co-hosted the party to celebrate hospitality and lifestyle. With the help of 10 Cane's hosted rum concoctions, and the hotel's delicious food (including mini curry burgers, boneless buffalo chicken strips, assorted cheeses and desserts), the guests all had a grand time (including yours truly). LA hostess Audrey Bernstein and international photography lifestyle magazine Big Magazine served as co-hosts as well, launching their latest projects http://www.oh-audrey.com/ and Big Show.
Fashion parties, like fashion shows, are most successful and memorable when various key components, such as the venue, the guests, the drinks and the entertainment, share a similar vision and collaborate to form a collective theme full of energy, spontaneity and festive feelings of good will. This was indeed the case October 16 in Los Angeles, during the city’s twice yearly Fashion Week presentations that are quickly rivaling fashion weeks from other stylish cities across the globe such as New York, Paris, London and Milan. VIP guests comprising the "friends and family" of the hosts and of the honorees mingled on the Crescent’s outdoor patio terrace, as well as inside around the bar and in the cozy comfy-couch lounge area across the room.
About the Party Hosts
The three hour event celebrated the launch of Audrey Bernstein’s hospitality and lifestyle website (http://www.oh-audrey.com/). Having already been featured on the cover of a recent Los Angeles Times Magazine as part of the city’s new guard of power and influence, Audrey Bernstein has the answers to the questions of people-in-the-know. In a short period of time, Audrey has run an eclectic gamut of activities that involve her internationally-known and sought-after social circle comprising of top talent in contemporary music, fashion and art. Originally from Maryland, Audrey moved to New York in her late teens and was quickly swept into the 80s alternative art scene, even modeling for a Sonic Youth album cover before eventually moving to Vermont, where with equal ease, she became involved in competitive snowboarding. Training both stateside and abroad, Audrey worked her way up until she was ranked seventh in the world. Eventually, she moved back to New York to resume her creative callings. Once back, Audrey, who had been planning parties and hosting dinners for her fellow athletes on the road, began catering independently and hosting intimate affairs, mixing New York’s bohemians, fashionistas and taste makers, which soon transformed into Mothra, a weekly party that attracted one of the most diverse and star-studded crowds on the East Coast.
Now, having relocated to Los Angeles in 2000, Audrey has been busy with new projects. After continuing her weekly parties at Le Deux Café for several years, in 2004, Audrey shifted gears again and opened the successful Bluebird Bakery in Culver City, which seamlessly blended the glamour of her celebrity nightlife with the warmth and intimacy of a small café. Now, Audrey has shifted her talents to the web and has launched Oh-Audrey, which she describes as a lifestyle website where crafts, cooking, fun and glamour are not mutually exclusive. The site includes weekly entertaining and cooking mini-shows offering advice from experts, many of them her friends. Oh-Audrey is accessible, organic and off-the-cuff, encapsulating the earthly glamour of her personal style.
Joining Audrey in receiving praise is Big Magazine (http://www.bigmagazine.com/). Launched in Madrid in 1993, and now based in New York, Big is one of the most admired and awarded magazines of its kind in the world. Big has an international circulation of 20,000 and is one of the most collected magazines in existence today. In the past ten years, the magazine has garnered over 30 prestigious awards from organizations such as The Society of Publication Designers and the Art Directors Club in New York.
Big is published four times a year and every issue is based on a theme or a different city in the world. Every issue also features a different star art director whose vision is a point of view regarding the specific theme. Free from the triviality and sound bite mentality that currently exhausts our media, Big is not just an editorial product: it is a unique phenomenon of contemporary print culture. No other magazine in the world produces each issue on a different theme/region, with different teams of contributors. Big collaborates with the world’s top art directors to give each issue a look and feel entirely its own. Though initially named for its size, the magazine’s title could now refer to its influence in the worlds of media, art, architecture, design and fashion.
Nearly two years ago, Big launched its fashion show themed issues. Big Show issues are photographically fresh and superior in the way they cover the designers, catwalks, backstage, paparazzi, stylists, hair, make-up, models and after-show parties during fashion weeks in New York, Milan, London and Paris. All three issues of Big Show, including the latest issue, were featured with projected images from the magazines at the Crescent event.
Helping to host the event at his Beverly Hills hotel was Gregory Peck (http://www.crescentbh.com/). Gregory is also the principal developer of a new hotel, now under construction, called the Cooper Square Hotel in New York City. Gregory is at the forefront of next generation independent hoteliers. He has a passion and talent for creating hotels with a relentless attention to detail, exceptional service and a strong sense of soul. He has been intimately involved for many years with the design, operation, acquisition and development of critically acclaimed hotel properties. He founded the Crescent Hotel Group in 2001 for the purpose of creating innovative and creative hotel properties.
The Crescent Hotel, with its friendly staff, personalized service and discreet charm, is truly a home away from home in Beverly Hills. Originally built in the early days of Hollywood as housing for silent movie stars, this 1930’s villa has 35 modern fully-appointed and super comfortable guest rooms, an intimate lounge with a rare indoor-outdoor fireplace and the restaurant boé, offering creative new American cuisine in an al fresco setting. The hotel boasts a relaxing outdoor patio porch where most of the guest to the event will find themselves lingering in conversation.
Joining Greg as co-host was Katy Rodriguez (http://www.katyrodriguez.com/), the California fashion maven who owns the renowned vintage store Resurrection. She presented her own namesake line in 2005 and most recently presented her collection during New York Fashion week. Katy has been featured in top publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, W, New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Elle. She has also been recognized by Vogue on their annual Best Dressed list. A long-time resident of San Francisco and New York, Katy now lives in Los Angels with her longtime partner Tony Alva. Photographs of her latest collection which was recently shown in New York will be projected at the event as well as guests in attendance wearing her dresses.
