TLR BEST BET: "FUEL"; DOCUMENTARY, OPENING FEB 13, IS A MUST-SEE OSCAR-WORTHY JOY THAT INSPIRES, EDUCATES AND MAY JUST "FUEL" A REVOLUTION

Event/Film Review by Don Rose

Go see "Fuel"! In theatres! This weekend if possible! Spread the word!
Why am I so excited? Read on...

The new documentary "Fuel" was screened at a special VIP event February 11th to a lively crowd of folks who, after braving the cold temps to watch the film, gave it rousing cheers. A panel discussion followed, moderated by the host of Air America's "Hollywood Clout" talk show, Richard Greene, featuring the film's director, Josh Tickell, as well as actor Peter Fonda. The event was held in the perfect spot (Brentwood's Conserv Fuel station, which sells both old-school gasoline and its better-for-environment cousin featured in "Fuel", Bio Diesel). During the evening, libations were served (including drinks from one of The LA Report's favorite companies, Steaz - love their Peach Ice Tea!), as well as samplings of hot tea, healthy savory snacks and sweet treats. Other celebs and notables in attendance, in addition to Greene and Fonda, included actor James Cromwell, and Lisa Garr, host of KPFK's excellent program, The Aware Show (http://www.theawareshow.com/).

The LA Report highly recommends that everyone go see this film, and tell ten others to do the same. This weekend is the best time to go, for at least 3 reasons: (1) the director will be appearing here in LA, and it is inspiring to hear Josh speak; (2) a strong opening weekend box office will help keep the film in theatres, and (3) big tix sales will show Hollywood that audiences are hungering for this kind of movie experience: enlightening while entertaining, informative while inspirational.

To convey a sense of this film's importance and quality, I consider "Fuel" to be a cinematic soul-brother to "An Inconvenient Truth" and every bit its equal (one of that film's producers, Laurie David, even appears in "Fuel"). Tickell's film also deserves to follow the same path as "...Truth" to win the Oscar for Best Documentary. To go a bit further with this analogy, "Fuel" could be considered the intellectual heir of "An Inconvenient Truth" and "Fahrenheit 911", integrating and inheriting some of the techniques, controversies and narrative power of both films into a new whole. I think we will look back at these three films as this decade's daringest documentaries, and its most politically potent. The top trio of the "Oh-Oh" years.

While all three of these docs are highly entertaining while conveying important information, "Fuel" strikes me as a bit more concrete and hopeful. It not only packs Bio-Diesel-truckloads of information for us to learn, but masterfully illustrates concrete steps that we the people, as well as cutting edge companies, can take and are already taking to solve the immense problems we face in the arena of power generation and consumption. BioDiesel, BioMass, Solar, Plugin Hybrids, Wind, even a kind of "Algae Energy" -- all these technologies are presented and shown to be viable options NOW, TODAY, not in some nebulous future. Even the end credits are packed with specific steps we can take to make a better world. By film's end, I felt for the first time that, my God, these persistent questions of can-we-get-off-polluting-fuels and what-ways-work actually have a positive answer: a combination of existing technologies that bright minds are already putting to work. It's not pie-in-the-sky Polly-Anna pipe dreams, it's real working solutions that come together to show how we can get off polluting power for good and get on with the green memes -- solutions already proven to be an economically plausible path to a sustainable world.

In short, "Fuel" shows us what our best and brightest future can be. We just have to claim it. Other countries are doing it (Sweden, for one, plans to be totally off fossil fuels by 2020 -- talk about 20/20 vision), and we can join the conscious caravan too. "Fuel" shows us the roadmap, and inspires us by showing we can get to the desired destination, powered by a combination of private investment plus more intelligent use of government resources (like, say, no more $300 million per day for an Iraq war that only gives us access to foolish fuels that kill us, for instance).

So, big kudos to director Josh Tickell for a stellar achievement, one which may just "Fuel" a revolution in our thinking about how we can solve our energy woes while also saving the planet -- and ourselves. Everyone should see this film. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

In fact, Peter Fonda proposed a great idea during the post-screening panel. He plans to buy lots of tickets and give them to friends so they can see this great movie. Smart idea. By pre-buying packs of passes, he can boost ticket sales opening weekend while making it easier for his friends to see the film. Just the kind of win-win idea this film is filled with. And with Valentine's Day arriving the day after "Fuel" opens, I can't think of a better gift for one's loved ones.

Special thanks to Dawna Shuman and Nicole Landers, who put on a great event, as they always do; they have earned a well-deserved reputation as the preeminent PR team for green-oriented eco-conscious events in Los Angeles.

Feb. 13, 2009: opening day for documentary "Fuel". Check local listings for times and locations. Website: www.theFUELfilm.com. Film features director Josh Tickell as well as Woody Harrelson, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Julia Roberts, Richard Branson, Larry Hagman and more in an intellectual and emotional powerhouse that is a cinematic cousin to "An Inconvenient Truth," "Fahrenheit 911" and "Who Killed the Electric Car." A TLR BEST BET.

TESLA MOTORS GRAND OPENING: EVs FOR THE UPPER CRUST COMBINE LOTUS-LIKE LOOKS WITH SUSTAINABILITY; LET YOUR WILD SIDE SHINE, WESTSIDE RIDE IN STYLE!

Event Report

Ready to drop six figures on a clean ride? Want to see how the rich and famous roll green? Check out the Tesla EV. Showroom now open at 11163 Santa Monica Blvd, in West LA; to schedule a test drive, call 310.473.8337. The very-high-performance (and high expectation-laden) electric car is ready to drive. It looks like a Lotus with fast acceleration (0-60 in 3.9 seconds) and superb sound system. More info at www.teslamotors.com. Below is a report from the showroom opening party, excerpted from the Sustainable Transport Club newsletter produced by Speakers Press:

Wow! I just got home from Tesla's grand opening of their first ever store located on the west side of LA, hard against the 405 freeway on Santa Monica Blvd. We've been anticipating this moment for some time, and we were not disappointed. As it was rush hour on the west side, which means driving is not any faster than walking, I chose to leave my beautiful wife the RAV while I drove the Vectrix. The Vectrix being a motorcycle, I was able to lane split and so I was there in about 10 minutes.

I pulled up just as three beautiful Tesla Roadsters took off with excited passengers. Stefano Paris, Plug In America's resident documentarian, was shooting tape as I grabbed one of the Tesla parking spots, this being a very tough neighborhood in which to find parking. The party was just getting underway as I saw many friends including Chris Paine, Director of "Who Killed the Electric Car?" and Chelsea Sexton, Linda Nicholes and many more.

Lots of free drinks and food got folks in a great mood, but the rides in the Tesla were the real hit. It had been almost two full years since I rode in one of those phenomenal cars, so I was ready for another turn. The driver behaved himself on the side streets until he was able to get out on Sepulveda with no one in front of us for a couple of blocks. Bam! he hit the accelerator and the adrenaline shot through my body providing me with a jolt that my first martini couldn't begin to dampen. Time for a second. I spent a lot of time just bringing people to the Tesla line for a ride. It was so much fun watching them as they got out with that big grin on their faces. My favorite was Marvin Campbell's son. This kid was beside himself with glee as he got in, and even more so when he got out.

It was fun talking to Elon Musk, chair of Tesla and the president, Ze'ev Driori and his lovely wife, Carolyn. The new Tesla sales manager for SoCal, Jeremy seemed as pleased as you can imagine someone would be who just landed the plum job of selling these incredible machines. The ride home on the Vectrix was fun, but all I could think about was how can I get my hands on one of those Roadsters. Time to go to bed and sleep on it.

PENCE HATHORN SILVER: GREEN-THEMED REAL ESTATE TEAM ACHIEVES 4TH HIGHEST GROSSING SALES IN NATION FOR COLDWELL BANKER

So Cal real estate team of Pence Hathorn Silver has recently been listed nationally as the 4th highest grossing sales team in the nation for Coldwell Banker, to be announced at the Coldwell Banker International Business Conference being held this year in Orlando, Florida

Charles Pence, John Hathorn, Loraine Silver and Brett Silver, who just made partner, make up this dynamic team of real estate agents. When working with PHS, clients get more than an agent. Pence Hathorn Silver has gone beyond just selling homes. Within the past year, they launched a “green campaign” and, working with developer John Lee, sold Santa Monica’s first 100% luxury eco-friendly home. They’ve been called upon as experts when it comes to buyers and sellers markets, the effects of natural disasters, and good advice in general when it comes time to find the perfect home. Most recently, PHS got the listing for Venice Collaboratives, a project that brings art and architecture together, contributing to the up and coming hip Venice neighborhood.

What’s on the horizon for this special group of agents? Pence Hathorn Silver landed the Idaho Court project. Designer William Jacobsen has transformed an irregularly shaped lot at Idaho and 20th Street into one of Santa Monica’s premier residential projects. You can’t miss these super-cool, modern looking townhouses even when doing a quick driveby.

Construction started from the underground garage, with a parallel course of redesigning the collection of above ground residences. The goal was to design a building that would be more reflective of the Wilson Jacobsen design sensibility, and better integrated into the Santa Monica environs. The project consists of four two-story townhouses, each featuring a street facing orientation and a spacious, modern contemporary feel. The streets are tree-lined and just steps from Franklin Elementary School. The entire construction project was overseen by Quality Built inspectors who focus on compliances with applicable building codes, architectural drawings and manufacturers specifications for the highest known litigation risks. The consultants at Quality Built assist with educating and improving quality -- water intrusion, comfort, safety and durability issues. The price of these stunning town houses start at $1.7 million. PHS only desires the best for their clients.

PHS is used to catering to Southern California’s high end clientele. Those loyal to the Westside leaders in real estate include A-list celebrities as well as Hollywood moguls and the uber wealthy. We all dream big, but Southern Cal is home to many who can afford this type of luxury living. That being said, PHS is currently listing one of the oldest and most historical homes on Georgina Avenue. The totally renovated 1911 home belongs to the daughter of a famous actor, is steps from an amazing ocean view, and was featured in House & Garden. Although this white picket fenced property looks small and quiet amongst others on the street, it’s actually a 26,600 square foot lot, with 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, an updated kitchen, top of the line appliances, 2 bedrooms upstairs, and more. It’s a designer's dream home with old world charm, listed at $7,995,000.

In addition to the above, the PHS team has another green home project currently underway in beautiful Pacific Palisades; stay tuned for more details.

It’s never just another day at the office for Pence Hathorn Silver; they feel it’s about the first day of other people’s lives and providing their clients with the best of the best. For more information about PHS, please see their website at: www.phsrealty.com.

FEB. 29: GALA FUNDRAISER TO LAUNCH CATHERINE BAUKNIGHT’S DOCUMENTARY, "HAWAII - A VOICE FOR SOVEREIGNTY"

*****
Award-winning photojournalist Catherine Bauknight’s stunning pilot documentary "Hawaii - A Voice for Sovereignty" will be celebrated with a gala, green-carpet event at Boulevard 3 in Hollywood, CA on Friday, February 29, 2008

"Hawaii - A Voice for Sovereignty," currently a 10-minute short, spotlights the struggle of indigenous Hawaiians to preserve their ancestral islands. The film documents the social, economic, and ecological issues that have developed in Hawaii since the takeover by the United States in 1893. In rare and moving interviews, native Hawaiians reveal their fears about the imminent loss of their culture and their land as overdevelopment threatens an ancient and environmentally sustainable way of life. Narration for the film will be supplied by the Hawaiian entertainer and humanitarian Al Harrington, star of the TV-show “Hawaii Five-O.”

Bauknight hopes to bring this film to the world stage by theatrical release, screenings at international film festivals, and television programming. "Hawaii-A Voice for Sovereignty" was selected from among 1,000 submissions to premiere at the Maui Film Festival in June 2007. It also screened at the Hana Film Festival in November 2007.

To promote these issues and raise money for the completion of a 90-minute full-length version of the documentary, the gala evening on Feb. 29 promises to be an exciting mix of live entertainment: a Hawaiian hula by Halau Keali’i O Nalani, a luau, a private screening of the documentary short, Hawaiian-themed food & drink, special celebrity attendees, and silent auction, featuring Hawaiian art. An exhibit of Catherine Bauknight’s photography entitled 20 yrs. of Rock-‘N-Roll: A Retrospect will also be on display.

“Civilizations are defined by their cultural traditions,” declares Bauknight. “I feel a sense of honor to aid these people in providing a voice for them to speak for themselves about their issues and culture.”

Bauknight’s exploration of cultural identities has its origins within her photojournalist background. A professional photographer for over two decades, Bauknight’s work has been featured in such distinguished publications as Rolling Stone, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, USA Today, Time, and People Magazine. She was one of five international photographers who risked their lives to cover the Tiananmen Square massacre. Other notable photography projects include: “Ethiopia - Bad Water,” and “The Renaissance of the Catawba Indians.” Bauknight is a member of both the NPPA and WIPI, and was an adjunct professor of photography at Cal State University-Fullerton and California Polytechnic State University. Bauknight is the Vice President on the Board of Directors for the Visual Artists Guild, a contract photographer for Zuma Press, and resides in Pasadena, CA.

The fiscal sponsor for the film is the International Documentary Association (IDA), a non-profit organization supporting documentary filmmaking. Additional sponsors include Women in Photography International (http://www.womeninphotography.org/), Pasadena Weekly (http://www.pasadenaweekly.com/), and B.A.R. Featured Art Auction

Losing his grandmother to breast cancer several years ago, artist Phil Barnes of Northridge chose to be involved in Fashion for the Cure as a personal statement to the love of his family member. "I express deeply through my art where designing a piece for the branding and fundraising of the event is truly quite an honor and act of my compassion," comments Phil. His acrylic painting dedicated to the event, "One Love" which will be auctioned off at the event, represents the victorious, healing, yet feminine essence of those affected by breast cancer.

EMMYS 2007 REPORT: Mix Media Award Suites at the Sofitel

(Sept. 13-15, 2007: Beverly Hills, CA) Event Report by Don Rose

From September 13 to 15, Alive!Expo presented the Mix Media Green Pavilion and Award Suites to celebrate the 2007 Emmy Awards. The event took place at the Sofitel Hotel in LA, and was a big success, drawing a packed crowd of celebs, VIPs and media during all three days it was open. Everybody got a little “Green” and then some.

All loved the Madison & Mulholland Swagsuite -- sponsored by Pioneer Elite, presented by Magnolia (the high-end home theatre company you may have seen inside Best Buy stores) -- and everyone also enjoyed the Mix Media Green Pavilion (photo shows the gifts inside the Mix Media Green Bag). It was indeed an Official "Hollywood green event", an excellent example of how more and more Hollywood parties and soirees have gone green to help raise awareness about climate concerns and healthier living.

On September 13, the Mix Media Award Suites kicked off its first day of Emmy celebration gifting some of the greatest in “green” goods and uber technology gadgets to TV’s favorite celebrities, who browsed, borrowed and got beauty treatments. Cheryl Hines (“Curb your Enthusiasm”) was all smiles and a delightful guest as she picked up some great eco-friendly products from Aubrey Organics and was very impressed with Kirsten Muenster’s ethically sourced jewels. The stunning Access Hollywood host Maria Menounos (photo) sat down for a foot massage but will be able to continue her relaxation at home with her new Detox America Foot Spa. The toys the boys couldn’t pull themselves away from included the Pioneer Elite Plasma TV and the rest of the mega home theater goodies (like the Blue Ray DVD player). Judd Nelson practically spent the day with Magnolia. Chris MacDonald went for a spin on America’s coolest new electric scooter from Vectrix (photo).
George Clooney’s Tango commuter car was a big hit. These sleek new rides are quiet as mouse! They look like half a car when you first see them, as if dropped onto our streets from the future -- but these babies are built for speed, as well as safety, and besides being able to fit into any tight parking spot, they are very cool to look at. “George Clooney’s Tango Commuter car was such a huge hit, he was so gracious to loan it to us for the green pavilion event,” said Kim Shimmel, owner of Mix Media.

The Suites also hosted Rachel Harris ( “Notes from the Underbelly”), Kevin Sorbo, Michael Urie and Mark Indelicato (“Ugly Betty”), Jason Lee, Greg Grunberg ("Heroes") and Jenna Baird (“4400"). And all this was just Day 1!

The Suites had another successful day on Friday, introducing the latest and greatest “green” products and super swag to many talented actors; some you will soon know as they make their debut on some of the networks' most talked about new shows. Performers in attendance included Hal Sparks from “Queer as Folk” (photo) as well as Kenny Johnson (“The Shield” and “Saving Grace”), Rachelle Carson-Begley (host of “Living with Ed” on HGTV), Omarosa ("The Apprentice"), Andy Baldwin ("The Bachelor"), Leyla Milani (“Deal or No Deal”), Christian Clemson (Emmy nominee for “Boston Legal”) Madeline Zima (“Californication”), Joshua Gomez (NBC’s new series “Chuck”), Dania Rameriz (“Hereos”), Tony Dovolani (choreographer/judge on “Dancing with the Stars”) and Kaisha Whitaker.

The Mix Media Award Suites then wrapped up pre-Emmy week with a bang on Saturday, the final day. Scott Baio (45 and single, according to his reality show's title) was one of the first guests of the day, followed by Tim Daly, Anthony Anderson ("K-Ville"), David Boreanaz ("Bones"), Sofia Vergara, Natalie Zea, Oscar Nunez (“The Office”), Robert Knepper (“Prison Break”), Sarah Lancaster, and the crew from "It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia." These thesps were just a handful of the Suites' fabulous visitors.

Anthony looked right at home on the Vectrix Scooter, while Scott and his fiancĂ©e picked up a Little Stork bag for their future little one. Hal Sparks and David Boreanaz got goodies from Detox America like their Bio Feedback Machine, and Home Detox Spas as well as Aubrey Organics for men. The ladies enjoyed other AliveExpo! products such as Aubrey Organics for women, Pure & Basic, Head Organics and were pleased to see one more person going green with accessories like Kirsten Muenster’s ethically sourced jewelry. Bags were overflowing with green goods! To top it off, LeSpa certificates were also gifted to VIP guests, good for any spa service of their choice from the Sofitel’s gorgeous new spa!

Another excellent room at the Mix Media Suites featured Pence Hathorn Silver, LA’s top Westside real estate firm. They joined the AliveExpo! Green pavilion lounge in order to build awareness and help educate the media, celebrities and general public about building green and becoming more environmentally conscious. PHS has worked with A-list celebrities and affluent clientele for years, but this was their first opportunity to visit face to face with some of televisions most recognized faces and share their “green” advice. Aside from welcoming potential buyers, they shared knowledge about building green, what that means for interested buyers or those who might want to go green.

Rachel Harris and fellow funny actress Cheryl Hines (photo) checked out the suite. Hines just purchased a home, but told PHS partner Loraine Silver that she has a friend who might be looking to buy and was excited to share all of this new information. PHS partners Charles Pence and John Hathorn entertained other celeb guests such as Hal Sparks, Kevin Sorbo, Gigi Grazer (who wrote “The Starter Wife"), Scott Baio, and Judd Nelson. Everyone was thrilled to hear about PHS's “going green” campaign. Pence Hathorn Silver also hosted celebrity interior designer Kari Whitman, HGTV TV’s Rachelle Begley, Michael Maloney and Paige Hemmis (hosts of “Extreme Home Makeover”) -- all of whom look forward to collaborating on future projects. The PHS room was a huge success, and now everyone knows who to turn to when it comes to the experts in real estate and making Southern California a better place to live (Pence Hathorn Silver can be reached at http://www.phsrealty.com/ or 800-874-5018).

The LA Report thanks Kim Shimmel, Mix Media, and Stacy Broff at Diamond Girl PR for their assistance on another very successful event.
